The fun thing about this short piece on Frederick the Great: not only does it present, and in part debunk, many of the tropes we know best about Frederick, it also emphasizes a central theme of our approach to this course: that history as we know and tell it is often 'shaped'. Always, the poster child for Absolutism, both historically and in his own time, is Louis XIV, "the Sun King", who boastfully asserted "L'etat, c'est moi".
